Homeopathic during the postpartum period

Homeopathic during the postpartum period

Here is the list of most effective medicines according to symptoms.

ARNICA
After birth or especially Caesarean Arnica will help the healing and ease pain and discomfort. It is a major remedy for postoperative healing.
As a guide one dose three times a day for up to three days should provide much relief, it can be repeated much more frequently if necessary, i.e. every two hours. If however you are still in some discomfort consider Bellis Perennis or Staphysagria below.
Remember Arnica will very much benefit your baby if the birth has been traumatic or forceps were used.

BELLIS PERENNIS
This remedy will further help cases where there is any residual bruising or discomfort remaining after Arnica. It is indicated for abdominal wounds and deep trauma and will complement the initial action of Arnica.

HYPERICUM
This remedy is indicated for injury to the coccyx during labour or delivery and for lacerations which affect parts rich in nerves, including surgery to the genital area. Helpful after episiotomy or a natural tear (compare to Staphysagria) and also for any residual effects following an epidural.

Episiotomy or laceration (in tincture form)
A tincture of hypericum mixed with calendula (Hypercal) can be purchased from a homeopathic pharmacy and used externally. Mix 10 drops in a tablespoon of sterile or cooled boiled water and apply to perineum on a compress. Keep in contact for up to an hour and repeat several times until relief is obtained.

STAPHYSAGRIA
This remedy is also indicated following caesarean, or episiotomy with pain in the incision, great sensitivity and redness of the wound. This is particularly helpful for example if the woman has had an unexpected caesarean which was not of her choosing and feels somewhat violated by the procedure. Consider also Arnica, Bellis Perennis (caesarean) or Hypericum (episiotomy) on their own individual merits

Homeopathic medicine during labour

Homeopathic medicine during labour

Following eight medicines are very effective as per symptoms during labour

1. ACONITE
Aconite is a remedy for shock and fear. In labour it will help if the labour is going too fast and pains are strong and frightening. Often the person who needs this remedy will have a fear that they might die. This might be completely out of proportion to the severity of the situation, i.e. there may be no real risk but the person has this feeling nonetheless.

2. ARNICA
Arnica is the most important remedy for bruising and trauma. During labour can help speed dilation of the cervix and can help prevent both haemorrhage and postpartum infection.
It can be helpful if the woman feels tired especially if there are no other indications for remedies such as Kali Phos or Gelsemium (compare further below).
Please note it can also be given to the baby in case of a traumatic birth or forceps delivery.

3. CAULOPHYLLUM
This remedy may be used if labour is delayed, i.e. if the cervix remains rigid and contractions are not coordinated, changing location and going into the bladder and groins. It can strengthen contractions when they are weak, of short duration or slow down to a stop.
Woman may feel trembly, chilly and weak and may also have pains in fingers and toes appear concurrently.

If this remedy seems indicated but has no effect consider Gelsemium below.
Do not use this remedy in pregnancy except under expert advice.

4. CHAMOMILLA
This remedy can be useful when the pain is centered in the lower back. Particularly with the baby in posterior position.
The woman will feel incredibly irritable with the pain. The pain will seem almost too much to endure. She may react by pushing people away, may not want to be touched or looked at and may react with anger if she has to be examined internally.
This remedy will not be useful unless there is extreme irritability.

5. KALI CARBONICUM
Low back pain. Relieved by pressure/rubbing (compare Chamomilla for posterior presentation).
Chilly and aggravated by draughts.
Aggravation during the night, especially 2-4am.
Woman may be nagging and complaining.

6. KALI PHOSPHORICUM
Exhaustion with no other indications or if Arnica is not helping.
May feel unable to cope and sensitive to noise.
It can be alternated with Arnica when labour slows down and the woman herself or uterine muscles may be tired.

7. GELSEMIUM
This remedy will be helpful if there is a failure to dilate with tiredness and weakness (compare to Kali Phos, Arnica and Caulophyllum).
The weakness often presents with very heavy eyelids and a dazed expression.
Woman may feel trembly especially from fright or anticipation.
It is a remedy for anticipatory anxiety. If entering the hospital and all the subsequent procedures causes the woman to feel very anxious and this seems to be impacting the labour i.e. decreasing or even halting previously strong contractions then Gelsemium by addressing the anxiety may help get things underway again.

8. PULSATILLA
The woman will feel very weepy and tearful and desperate for the company of her partner or other loved ones if she requires Pulsatilla. She will feel better with fresh air.
If the contractions are weak and the cervix is not dilating as it should Pulsatilla can be considered but only if a similar emotional state is presenting.

Childbirth.

Childbirth.
Dr. Sayeed Ahmad D. I. Hom. (London)

Childbirth is the process by which a woman gives birth to a baby. A pregnant woman carries a baby within her body inside a hollow, muscular organ called the uterus. After about nine months, the baby passes out of the uterus and through the vagina, also called the birth canal. Childbirth can be painful, but the severity of the pain varies among women.

The birth process is called labor. The process begins when the muscles of the uterus start to tighten and relax in a rhythmic pattern. As labor progresses, these muscle contractions become stronger and more frequent, causing the cervix (lower part of the uterus) to open. After the cervix has opened about 4 inches (10 centimeters), the contractions gradually force the baby through the cervix and out of the woman's body through the vagina. Many women assist the process by "pushing" with their abdominal muscles in time with their contractions. The amniotic sac, a membrane containing fluids that surround the baby, breaks before or during labor. The fluids flow out through the vagina.

In most births, the head is the first part of the baby that comes out of the mother's body. But in some deliveries, called breech births, the feet or buttocks come out first. After the baby has come out of the mother's body completely, the umbilical cord is cut, and the infant starts to breathe. The umbilical cord is a tubelike structure that connects the baby to the placenta, an organ attached to the wall of the uterus. Food and oxygen from the mother's blood pass through the placenta to the baby during pregnancy.

After the baby is born, the muscles of the uterus continue to contract until the placenta separates from the uterus and is expelled through the vagina. The discharged placenta is also called the afterbirth.

The length of labor varies greatly among women. It averages 13 to 14 hours for women having their first babies and lasts 7 to 8 hours thereafter.

Some woman need an operation called a cesarean section to deliver a baby. In this operation, a surgeon removes the baby and the placenta through an incision in the abdomen and uterus. Cesarean sections are performed for a number of reasons, but chiefly because the baby cannot pass through the birth canal. The woman's pelvis may be too small, or the baby may be too large.

Methods of childbirth. Most women in developed countries deliver their babies in hospitals, which have specially equipped birth facilities. During childbirth, a woman may receive medication to relieve her labor pains. In some cases, a physician will administer a drug to induce (bring on) labor. Before delivery, the physician may widen the woman's vaginal opening by making a small incision called an episiotomy.

In many cases, physicians use an electronic fetal monitor to record the baby's heartbeat during labor. Disturbances in the heartbeat may signal that the baby is in danger and that a cesarean section may be necessary.

During the 1960's and the 1970's, many hospitals developed educational programs to prepare women for childbirth and parenting. These programs instruct both mothers and fathers on pregnancy, childbirth, and infant care. In addition, such programs as natural childbirth and the Lamaze method teach relaxation exercises and breathing techniques to lessen the discomfort of labor, thus reducing the need for painkilling drugs. Many such drugs pass to the baby through the placenta, so some women choose to avoid them. Some women also avoid drugs so they can remain alert throughout labor.

A type of anesthesia called an epidural is another popular method for relieving labor pain. This form of pain relief does not affect the baby or reduce the mother's alertness, but it must be given by a specially trained doctor. Epidural anesthesia is injected through a small tube that is inserted into the back next to the spinal cord. When the anesthesia is absorbed by nerves that go from the spine to the uterus, it almost completely eliminates labor pains.

At many hospitals, birthing rooms offer an alternative to traditional labor and delivery rooms. Most birthing rooms resemble a home bedroom and are used for labor, delivery, and sometimes recovery. Birthing rooms provide a relaxed and intimate atmosphere where the hospital's facilities are still at hand if complications occur.

For convenience, following is the Pregnancy Table for expected date of delivery:

Pregnancy table for expected date of delivery

Find the date of the last menstrual period in the top line (light-face type) of the pair of lines.

The dark number (bold-face type) in the line below will be the expected day of delivery.

I have come across with an article published on 16 Mar 2004 in "KID’S HEALTH" Magazine, which is reproduced below to assist new mothers.

Steps to Recovering From Delivery

That Every Woman Needs to Know

You have spent the last nine months of your life preparing, anticipating, writing out lists of names, picking out the perfect home from the hospital outfit and stocking up on diapers while waiting for that tiny precious life to arrive and now the moment has come. After the excitement and family visitors, it’s a special bonding time for you and your baby.

You’re filled with love every time you look at your baby, yet you are feeling a mix of new and unexpected physical and emotional experiences. Lamaze classes, and advice from your mother and friends who have had children, may have prepared you for childbirth, but not for this.

First, the important thing to realize is that these feelings are normal and the key to dealing with them is acknowledgement, then finding a coping strategy. The following list compiled by the Kid’s Health magazine offers what physical and emotional symptoms to expect after childbirth:

Physical symptoms

* Tenderness in the breasts: Your breasts may become painfully enlarged when the milk comes in and your nipples may become sore.
* Constipation: The first bowel movement is usually delayed to the third or fourth day after delivery and you may feel sore due to sensitive hemorrhoids.
* Episiotomy: If your perineum (the area of skin between the vagina and the anus) was cut by your doctor during the birth, it may be difficult to walk or sit because the stitches are healing.
* Hemorrhoids: These are very common yet usually unexpected and not noticed initially.
* Hot and cold flashes: Your internal thermostat is fluctuating trying to adjust to the new hormone and blood flow levels.
* Urinary or fecal incontinence: Coughing, laughing or straining can cause you to inadvertently pass urine due to the muscles that were stretched during delivery, particularly long vaginal deliveries.
* "After pains": Contractions caused by the shrinking of your uterus may worsen when your baby is nursing.
* Vaginal discharge: Your periods may be heavier, with clots sometimes the size of golf balls, but will gradually taper off and stop altogether after two months.
* Weight: Before you start losing weight, your postpartum weight will be around 10 pounds below your full-term weight.
*

Wide-range of emotions

* "Baby blues": As a result of hormonal changes such as exhaustion, unexpected birth experiences, adjusting to new roles and feelings of loss of control over your life, makes up about 80 percent of what new moms feel. Emotions such as sadness, crying, or anxiety can happen days or weeks after delivery.
* Postpartum depression: 10 percent to 20 percent of new moms may experience mood swings, anxiety, guilt and persistent sadness. This is considered more serious than the baby blues and can occur several months after delivery.
* Postpartum psychosis: A severe and fairly rare condition that may become life threatening to you and your baby and you should call your doctor immediately if you experience any feelings of harming yourself or your baby.
* What to expect after a cesarean section

* This is a major surgery and takes a much longer time to heal.
* The worse pain will be the day after the surgery and will gradually begin to subside.
* Don’t scratch the area of the incision and take sponge baths for the first several days.
* If you notice any redness or swelling around the incision, call your doctor to make sure it isn’t infected.
* To help the recovery process, start gentle exercises such as abdominal tightening, bending and walking, (with assistance initially) as soon as possible.
* Drink lots of water, preferably eight to ten glasses a day.
* Expect vaginal discharge.
* Avoid stairs and driving until you have healed properly.

Taking time for yourself

One major area of new mothers’ lives that is thrown off kilter once the baby arrives is allowing time for you. Experts say that it’s important for moms to know that if you feel like you need some time for yourself, that you not only deserve it but are entitled to it.

Making time in your schedule whether that be through the help of a significant other, family member or friend, will help with giving you the feeling of having control over your life and gaining some sense of self.

Experts recommend beginning a self-care program early on after having your baby and always remember that good mothering does not mean perfect mothering. Formulating a self-care program involves developing a sense of balance between yourself and family members and pursuing your own interests and goals that you set for yourself. Not only are your needs important to the development of the family, but also are fundamental to their happiness.

The following exercise is a great way to help you set your priorities after motherhood:

Make a list of five activities, goals, hobbies or interests that are important to you to pursue in the year following childbirth.

Next, make a promise to yourself that you will look at this list a few months after your baby is born. By doing this exercise, you can integrate your interests with motherhood.

Keeping a strong relationship with your partner

Having a baby always puts relationships to the test and it’s up to you and your partner to determine if your relationship will get stronger or weaker as a result of this experience.

As it was before the baby, keeping an open line of communication, especially if there’s a problem, is even more critical now because you don’t have as much time to spend together and you have many more responsibilities.

Try to put aside some time in the day for alone time and share your feelings as honestly and supportively as you can. Come up with solutions together as a couple.

Keep your romance alive by scheduling "date nights."

Obesity and Homeopathy

Few words about writer

Dr. SAYEED AHMAD is a renowned and successful Homœopath for more than 25 years. He has been awarded Honours with Diploma "D. I. Hom." for securing highest 97% marks from The British Institute of Homœopathy, England. He is writer of 13 books on homeopathy.

Obesity
Dr. Sayeed Ahmad D. I. Hom. (London)

WHAT IS OBESITY :

Obesity can be best described as the most common nutritional disorder specially in the affluent group of people. It is a condition in which excessive accumulation of fat takes place in the body due to intake of food in excess of physiological requirements. Therefore, overnutrition is as much malnutrition as undernutrition is. An excess of 50 calories per day can increase about 25 Kgs in a period of ten years.
Obesity has been classified into 3 types as follows, depending upon the excess in weight :

Above Normal Weight :
Mildly obese 10-15%
Moderately obese 10-20%
Very obese 20% and above.
Obesity is generally caused by two factors i. e. :
1. Exogenous
– Overeating or intake of excessive energy.
2. Endogenous
-- Due to inherent metabolic disturbance of the body.

HOW TO KNOW IF YOU ARE OBESE :
Obesity should not be taken lightly. Obesity means you are 20% or more above the recommended weight for your sex, age, height and bone structure. Extra pounds beneath the 20% mark simply mean you are over-weight.

CAUSES OF OBESITY :
Obesity can occur both in male and female at any age. However, it is more common in female.
Some of the following factors may contribute to the development of obesity :
1. It is common in those who take excess of food with little physical work or exercise.
2. Excessive eating habits is also one of the factors.
Obesity is rarely seen amongst active persons and it is more common in those with sedentary habits.

ADVERSE EFFECT OF OBESITY :

1. Obesity reduces the life expectancy.
2. Obesity produces the following physical disabilities :
a. Abdominal Hernias.
b. Varicose Veins.
c. Flat Feet.
d. Bronchitis.
e. Osteoarthritis of Knee, Hips and Lumber Spine.
3. Due to poor reflexes, liable to fall down on slippery floors.
4. High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
It leads to greater wear and tear of the entire vascular system and consequently it doubles the risk of heart attack and stroke. It may also cause damage to kidneys.
5. It also produces metabolic disorders such as :
a. Gout.
b. Cholesterol in Arteries.
c. Stone in Gall Bladder.
d. Diabetes Mellitus.
It is needless to add that ‘Excess Weight’ (Obesity) is linked to a higher risk of heart diseases and therefore it increases the overall risk of death particularly to persons with Diabetes or Cardiovascular disease.

REDUCING WEIGHT (OBESITY)

It is estimated that an active person will burn about 12-13 calories a day per pound of body weight. Therefore, a person having weight 140 pounds will need roughly 1700-1800 calories a day to maintain that weight, and less to reduce it. This can be used as a guideline for planning weight loss programme, by reducing calorie intake.
It is already stated that obesity is caused by intake of excess calorie and furthermore the lack of physical work or exercise is also one of the contributory factors. Thus, reducing weight means one has to reduce calorie intake by reducing his high-calorie diet. It may therefore be suggested to an obese adult to stick to his daily diet providing 1300 kcal (calorie) which may help in reducing about 0.5 – 1 Kg a week. The reducing diets should contain adequate amounts of Proteins, Vitamins and Minerals. Once the body weight comes to the standard level according to the height, the weight maintenance diets (adequate in Proteins, Vitamins and Minerals) should be taken to keep weight constant i. e. between 1700-1800 kcal (calories). Therefore, daily diet should contain balanced amount of cereals, pulses, green leafy vegetables, other vegetables, roots and tubers, fruits, milk, fats and oils, sugar and jaggery, groundnut (roasted) ; meat /fish /eggs (to be excluded by vegetarian).

IMPORTANT TIPS TO REDUCE OBESITY :

1. You may not eat or drink the following :
a. Bacon, Fatty Meats, Sausages.
b. Beer, Liquor, Wines.
c. Butter, Margarines.
d. Cakes, Cookies, Crackers, Doughnuts, Pastries, Pies.
e. Candy, Chocolates, Nuts.
f. Creams – Sweet and Sour, Cream, Cheese, Non-Dairy Cream.
g. French Fried Potatoes, Potato Chips.
h. Pizza, Popcorn, Snack Foods.

Irregular or Missing Menstrual Periods

What Causes Menstrual Cycle

When a girl reaches puberty, her hormones become active. A hormone called estrogen is made in the ovaries. Estrogen affects the lining of the womb and makes it grow and develop. After 10 to 14 days, the ovaries release an egg, and begin to produce another hormone called progesterone. The egg has now moved from the ovary to the uterus through the Fallopian tube. If the egg has not been fertilized by a sperm, the production of progesterone stops. When that happens, the lining of the womb comes away with a some blood and the woman gets her monthly period. The entire process takes about 28 days.

Irregular and Missing Menstrual Periods

Menstrual cycles that vary more than a few days in length from month to month are considered irregular. Most menstrual cycle intervals occur about every four weeks, with the normal range between 24 and 35 days. To measure your menstrual cycle, start counting from the first day of your last period and stop counting on the first day of your next period. Don't worry if you have one or two irregular cycles; Occasionally all women have variations. True irregularity persists over several months so if you do notice wide fluctuations in your cycle, speak to your doctor about it.
Periods are often light or widely spaced both when a young woman starts having periods and when a woman is nearing the menopause. This is normal because the woman is not producing an egg every month. Many women experience widely spaced periods typically having one or two periods every six months. The common cause of infrequent periods is a condition called polycystic ovaries. This is a common condition affecting as many as 10 per cent of women. There are a large number of very small (less than 1cm) cysts on the ovaries and these are in association with a hormone imbalance. The result of this is that women do not ovulate regularly and so their periods are usually infrequent.
Some of the factors associated with temporary cessation of periods are: 1) Calorie-restricted diets 2) Strenuous exercise3) High levels of stress. Some women with no previous symptoms also miss periods after discontinuing use of oral contraceptives. Typically, in each of the above situations, moderation in diet, and exercise, stress reduction, and the passage of time, help return normal menstrual function. Depending on the cause, there may be too much or too little estrogen produced by the body. Over a long period of time too much estrogen can cause overgrowth of the cells in the lining of the uterus, (which can lead to cancer), while too little estrogen can cause calcium loss from the bones (leading to osteoporosis).
